5 Misconceptions About Liposuction
Liposuction is a popular cosmetic procedure that removes fat from certain areas on your body to create a slimmer and more toned look. Although it’s one of the most well-known cosmetic surgeries, many people have misconceptions about liposuction. If you’re considering undergoing the procedure, it’s important that you know what’s fact and what’s fiction. Here are five common misconceptions about liposuction:
Misconception 1: Liposuction is a weight loss surgery.
Liposuction usually only removes a few pounds of fat in total. It’s not meant to be a drastic weight loss surgery, so the best candidates are those who are at or near their ideal weight. The surgery will remove stubborn pockets of fat that you can’t get rid of with diet and exercise, so your doctor will make sure you’re close to your goal weight before recommending liposuction.
Misconception 2: Liposuction prevents you from gaining weight.
Your fat cells expand when you gain weight, and liposuction won’t prevent this from happening all over your body. The surgery does remove a large portion of the fat cells in the targeted areas, so you probably won’t gain much weight back in those places. However, if you fail to follow a healthy diet and exercise plan after the surgery, you’ll still gain weight, and the remaining fat cells in your body will still expand.
Misconception 3: There’s an age limit on getting liposuction.
As long as you’re in good physical and psychological health, you can be a candidate. Older people can get liposuction if they’re healthy and if their doctor approves it. The surgery may not be quite as successful in older adults because their skin tends to be less elastic, but liposuction can still create noticeable results.
Misconception 4: There’s no downtime after liposuction.
Liposuction is a surgical procedure, so it does have a recovery period. Most people take a week off of work to recover, and bruising and swelling can last for three weeks or longer. You won’t be able to jump right back into your daily routine after the surgery, so you should be prepared for some downtime.
Misconception 5: Liposuction is just for women.
While the procedure is more popular with women than with men, plenty of men undergo liposuction every year. The most common areas for men to target with liposuction include the love handles, abdomen, and chest. The surgery works just as effectively on men as on women, and it can make the torso look more toned and defined.
